ABOUT US

Preserving Sikh heritage, serving the global Sangat

Folding my hands together and lowering my head, I said to the Infinite Being that this Panth will flourish in the world only with your support. (Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Bachitter Natak).

OUR APPROACH

What is the Khalsa Panth

Sri Guru Nanak Dev spread a communal message of oneness and the Sikh Gurus were known to have socially and religiously diverse followings. Amidst this community, the Tenth Guru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji created the ceremony of Khande Ki Pahul on Vaisakhi of 1699. This became the initiation ceremony of the Khalsa Panth. After initiating the first five members known as the Panj Pyare, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji asked to join the fellowship of the Khalsa. Joining the Khalsa Panth is for those committed to a pious, disciplined and regimented life, preserving Sikh teachings, working for the wellbeing of the Sikh community and serving the human race as one, with all caste distinctions erased. Of the spirit and appearance of this fellowship the Tenth Guru writes: The Khalsa Panth is the third way, the lionheart Sikhs have been awakened and these warriors adorn the blue dress. (Uggardanti).

Our Vision

To guide Khalsa Panth into a digital era of excellence with a connected community where tradition integrates with technology. The Digital Hub will empower every member to connect, learn and thrive and restore Sikh historical wisdom.

Our Mission

To institutional a digital platform for the Khalsa Panth that preserves Sikh wisdom, promotes technological advancement and fosters spiritual enrichment. To advocate Puratan Maryadas while upholding cultural heritage and engaging in civic activities and policy changes that instil social responsibility

The Khalsa

The term Khalsa has multiple meanings. One meaning is those who the Guru considers their own and who can access the Guru directly. This links to the Tenth Guru disbanding the masand structure. Another meaning refers to those who have experienced the essence of the primal Soul. A further meaning describes those who took birth from within the Tiger. The imagery of the Tiger represents the Guru’s intention that Sikhs be capable of defending themselves, surviving difficult times and exercising martial prowess when necessary.

The Panth

Panth means path and describes the community of the Khalsa who recognise and walk the path shown by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Upon taking Khande Ki Pahul, one joins the ranks of the Panth and incorporates prayer, meditation and community service into daily life. At one time in history the Panth was almost entirely nomadic. During the holocausts of the 1760s Sikhs lived and travelled in caravans known as the Chalda Vaheer while seeking shelter from persecution. With the rise of the Sikh Empire a Sikh aristocracy and civilian class flourished. Those who identified as the Panth continued traditional ways of dressing and living and represented the authority of the Guru. Known as the Akalis, they served at the Akaal Takht, the spiritual and martial headquarters of the Sikhs. Salok Dumallay Da states: We are the Akali, we belong to all, our Panth is distinct from all.

Colonialism and Reforms

After the Anglo Sikh Wars the head of the Khalsa Panth, Jathedar Akali Hanuman Singh, was hunted down and killed in 1846. The Akaal Takht was taken over by the East India Company. Akali Baba Prehlada Singh led a small group of Akali warriors into exile for more than a decade. Reform movements emerged, including Babbar Akali and Akal Dal groups. By the 1920s Baba Sahib Singh Kaladhari became leader and Jathedar of the Akaal Takht. He is the last of the original Akalis to serve this position and later stepped aside for a committee to manage Sikh shrines for a hundred year period. Baba Sahib Singh Kaladhari was imprisoned for refusing to give up the right of the Panth to carry arms. He prophesised that the original traditions of the Khalsa would one day flourish across the seven seas.

Present Day leadership

The present leader of the Akali Nihang Singh and of the Khalsa Panth in orthodox Sikh traditions is Jathedar Akali Baba Joginder Singh Ji. They have overseen a revival of the ancient traditions of the Guru by training Sikhs in the diaspora. In their visits to the UK in 2022 and 2023 thousands participated in ceremonies and celebrations across more than 15 cities. Khalsa Panth UK promotes and advocates authenticity, tradition, diversity and inclusion and organises events such as talks, seminars, meditation sessions and martial arts displays. Engagement includes partnerships with Sikh groups and public institutions and work to support representation for the Nihang Singh community.

The Khalsa is my very form. I reside within the Khalsa. The Khalsa is my primal limb. I am always with the Khalsa. (Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Sri Sarbloh Parkash Granth). Jo Prabhu ko milbo chahe khoj shabad mein le.
